Gentlemen;
This is a great book. It covers the inside strategy of the debates and shows how superior Lincoln was in content. Lincoln started a little reserved ad then gradually got stronger each week. At he end he was a in top condition and looked and sounded good. Douglas started in his usual wild horse style and tried to give just about the same blast each week. After a couple times his voice weakened and he tried to use cough drops and whiskey to boost himself. In the end he was a near physical wreck and never recovered. He backed Lincoln on the war and died just about the time of the bull Run Battle.
Each side strongly claimed that there man was much superior in the debates. True, Douglas got all he wanted, another term based on the outdated legislature, but, he was damaged politically and physically. His political star was falling, he was passed his peak, a near lame duck.. Lincoln gained everything but the office. The national publicity from his strong showing was parlayed into the GOP nomination and the White House.
This book gives the clear story of Lincolns success which later gained him the White House..

I hope someday to make a tour of all the debate sites. For now I read about them. This book focuses on how even though Lincoln did not get elected to the Senate he still won the debates because of how he shaped the issues and how he saw that there was something wrong with slavery's existence and he pointed out how "Judge Douglas don't care either way". Good book
