What happens when we’re pushed to the edge by life’s tragedies? We’re overwhelmed and unsure how to handle the pressure. How do we cope? How do we make sure that stress doesn’t over take our physical and emotional well-being? What helps us move forward with our lives? Resilience.
“Second Wind” praises the resiliency of women by retelling 12 stories of inspiration and hope, showing that women have the ability to bounce back after all types of adversity. Emily’s self-respect was been beaten and battered by two abusive husbands. She had twin baby daughters, no job and no income. After running away from her second husband with only $500, Emily founded the anti-domestic violence organization that she leads today. Candace incurred traumatic brain injury from a biking accident, resulting in a coma. Doctors thought she wouldn’t live and, if she did, that she probably would never walk or talk again. Yet in the spring of 2011, she ran in the Boston Marathon. Other accounts describe stories of divorce, job loss and the passing of loved ones. Regardless of the tragedy, these women made it through with strength and fortitude.
Using examples from the stories themselves, Brykman discusses the elements and qualities necessary to build resilience. Several of the women gained stability from friends and family. A few helped others in similar situations, enabling everyone to move forward together. Others turned to their faith for comfort and strength. Some called on the power of their innermost selves to get them through the tough times. No matter what the situation was, they worked through their traumas with “I can get through this” attitudes.
This book applauds the ability of women to bounce back from all types of adversity. It’s about moving away from crises and going forward again. It’s about more than just surviving; it’s about making life manageable, meaningful and fulfilling again. It’s about women catching their second wind.

Second Wind The Resilience of Women edition by Beth Brykman SelfHelp eBooks Reviews

This really helped me to empathize with a friend going through a divorce. Understanding her issues better enabled me to help her. The other stories were inspiring.
I enjoyed reading the stories and could relate to quite a few of them. Many women have experienced one or more similar stories in their own life. Highly recommend for a book club (or group) read.
An uplifting and inspirational compilation of stories about women who have overcome a wide variety of tragedies and obstacles. In her writing, Bryman vividly brings each personal story to life, so the reader quickly becomes invested in the ultimate success of the subjects. A great read for anyone who needs to find their own inner resilience, and a great way to support the two organizations that will receive the book proceeds.
I shared this novel with my book club and it was a smash hit! Each member of the club could relate their own lives to different stories contained within the pages. The page-turner is truly inspiring, showcasing the resilience of women in a variety of situations and throughout the country. Even better, the profits go to a good cause, so we all felt good about helping improve lives, and continuing the cycle of strong women. This really put the "wind" back in our sails!
"Second Wind The Resilience of Women" by Beth Brykman shares remarkable stories about women who have risen beyond their life obstacles in a very relatable way. The lessons and varied tools used by the women to help them successfully persevere have given me hope as well as some concrete methods to move past my own obstacles in life. The book was quite inspirational regarding the human will to carry on. Great book club book and the proceeds will help others to carry on as well.
Overcoming life's top challenges -- death of a child, divorce, job loss, personal injury or illness, and abuse -- always requires flat-out resilience. Easier said than done! But Beth Brykman's, "Second Wind The Resilience of Women," makes it easier to achieve by giving women readers an inspirational and informative guide to help them find and strengthen their own innate resilience. Page after page, readers get an inside view to the personal and practical steps women in the book took to heal, move beyond crisis, and create new purpose. Brykman became so personally inspired by the women she interviewed that she decided to donate 100 percent of the book's proceeds to two nonprofits -- the Gantt Family Fund (recovery from brain trauma) and Abigail's Friends (domestic abuse/violence prevention) -- both begun by women profiled in "Second Wind." Buy the book and you'll be helping countless other women while helping yourself become more resilient.
An inspiring read. As someone who's been laid off in the past, Second Wind's "Overcoming job loss" chapter resonated with many of my own experiences. The "Words of wisdom" section at the end of the chapter offers useful advice for anyone in a similar situation. While less personal to me, the rest of the book which discusses overcoming illness, divorce, abuse, and loss of a loved were inspirational in their demonstration of the resilience of the human spirit. I would recommend this book both to those facing adversity and the casual reader looking for an uplifting read.
