Tanner Barrett lives with her parents and brother in a mansion overlooking the town of Spooner Pass, Colorado, but life isn't as perfect as the four-car garage made it seem. While her family is close-knit and happy, the rest of the town vilifies them for their small chain of medical marijuana dispensaries. Some of the most hateful critics come from within the walls of her own high school, as the students torment her and the teachers--several of them customers in her parents' stores--despise her for representing an entire counter-culture that society has always feared and looked down on.

Even though the law said it was legal, the town of Spooner Pass never said it was right. And the ugly accusations from people in town, accusations that have nothing to do with healing and a lot to do with addiction, might just have a little ring of truth to them...

Not My Kind is Damon's fourth young adult title.

Not My Kind eBook Lorca Damon

I've read other work by this author, but I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading this one.... after all, the cover is a big marijuana plant.

The story is told from the point of view of 16-year-old Tanner. Her family is rich because they own a chain of pharmacies that sell legal marijuana - legal in the state of Colorado that is, but not legal federally. Because of the family business, Tanner is looked down upon at school - by her schoolmates and her teachers - and has zero friends, until a new girl with Aspergers comes along. After a particularly bad bullying incident, she convinces her parents to let her homeschool. This is all well and good, but it leaves her twin brother in school to cope with all of the crap that used to get thrown at Tanner.

Then the unthinkable happens - one of the stores gets raided by the Feds... and things go quickly from bad to worse to even worser. I mean, seriously... I didn't think any more bad stuff could happen, and IT DID!

This author has a gift of storytelling. I was drawn into the story and the characters, and I cared for them, and I enjoyed reading it. The ending both shocked and horrified me. And the book made me think.

So why only four stars? The author left some unanswered questions, a few that seem/are obvious in certain parts of the country, but not so obvious in others. (I don't want to give away the story, but there is a scene where gasoline just happens to show up. In Colorado, where the story is set, they would have gasoline handy for running generators during power failures.... where I live in the South, not so much.)

If the author chose to do a slight revision and answer those questions, this book would be perfect.

Still, highly recommended for both the storytelling and the message.

Not My Kind eBook Lorca Damon Reviews

This author is well known for taking it there. You know, to that point nobody else dares touch--and then, pushing it just a bit further, into the stuff nobody's even THOUGHT of yet. This time she's gone cutting edge with the sharp of a scalpel, imagining a world where not only is medical marijuana sold family-style from a mom 'n pop outfit, but the local teens have had time to come up with cool new ways to torture mom 'n pop's daughter. And Lord, do they creatively torture. As always when I'm reading Lorca Damon's work, I found myself agape with the book propped up in front of me, wondering, "How does she come up with this stuff?!" The events described are completely plausible, yet beyond the scope of normal. It's like her characters live in a News of the Weird world.

So, the hot topics of the day teen bullying? Check. Weed smoking? Check. Medical dispensaries of said weed? Check. Weird forms of child abuse? Check. And finally, Autism Spectrum? Check. That last one was my favorite part in Not My Kind, we not only find a character with Aspergers, which is rare enough, but we find a BIT PART character with Aspergers, who is the coolest character in the book! In other words, a teen with an Autistic streak? Just a thang, son; ain't worth makin' a starring role out of. And certainly ain't no reason for pity; in fact, pity the fool who lacks that Aspergers' flair. Note to Lorca Damon give us more Camryn!

There are a certain few authors whose books I can eat like candy. They're funny and quick and colorful; they make me greedy, and I get pissed when there's not a new one for me to unwrap. Lorca Damon is one of these, for me, and Not My Kind keeps the tradition going. If you haven't read her books yet, start here, or start over there; not a one of 'em will disappoint. And stay posted, 'cause more than likely she's got another one coming down the pike, thank God.
Lorca Damon is a humorist. ? Oh, ye of little faith, I say to myself. She has clearly spread her wings with Not My Kind. She hits both timeless and edgy, contemporary topics. Timeless Family dynamics, youth learning parents are not perfect, defining oneself in a chaotic universe. Edgy, contemporary Medical marijuana, bullying (yes, also a timeless topic), adult decisions required before experience provides the tools to weigh the risks. Not My Kind got me thinking about issues not in my daily sphere. What would my position be on medical marijuana if my state legalized it? How would I feel if I learned close relatives were not what they seemed? That is, I could no longer trust what I thought to be "truth'. How would I find balance in this new world? You'll find yourself contemplating issues raised in Not My Kind long after you've completed it. A true mark of a great book, from my point of view. Thnx, Lorca, for spreading your wings!
How do you come up with stuff? I never lost interest in this book. First book I have read by author but won't be my last!
In Not My Kind, Ms. Damon has done a superb job of presenting the reality of social issues that often divide us. It successfully portrays how stereotypes can be misleading. This is an engaging story with characters that are real. They open the door to a world unseen by many of us and are easy to love or disdain.
How on earth can any words I write do justice to this book! Lorca Damon has excelled herself in taking the reader into a world that's alien to many but done it in a way that draws you in and carries you through. She touches on so many subjects that at least one is sure to fit within the readers experience somewhere [bullying, autism, weed, parent/child dynamics, dying, pain, PTSD to name a few] and does it in a way that's often very funny indeed. Excellently written and a strong story that flows ....... Well worth the money.
