The electrical activity of your brain oscillates, fluctuating up and down like waves in the sea. Where do these oscillations comes from and what do they mean? This book explores the cutting-edge neuroscientific research showing that these brain rhythms affect how you see, hear, and understand the world around you, and how you move your fingers, eyes, and vocal chords to interact with the world. It is explained by a neuroscientist, and intended for a non-scientific audience.

The author presents the basic concepts necessary to understand this topic. And he does in a way that makes the information easy to understand. I especially like that he presents the broad strokes without bogging down the discussion with endless details, yet references are provided for those readers who would like to go deeper. One criticism is that the author indicates that neurofeedback outcomes may be merely placebo effects, and this is not true. Numerous animal studies have been done, and animals are not susceptible to placebo effects. Also, the long term follow up in human studies show that the effects persist. I agree that brain wave training is not a magic bullet, but as a component of an overall treatment approach it can be invaluable. II found this a concise and very useful read that helped me understand critical concepts.Product details

Great introduction to brain rhythms! Easy read!
Wonderful book. A fun to read !
Equally enjoyable for a scientific as well as non-scientific audience. -)
Nice small book to get an idea about some mechanisms of the brain, together with a lot of references.
Great little read on what oscillations are, what we k ow about them and what we do not (yet) know. Written for laypeople, but as a medical student in a research lab I still learned much that I didn't know before. Mike Cohen's humor earns the fifth star.
Excellent introduction. I highly recommend it.
Very basic. The author was clearly well informed on the subject, but for details readers were directed to refer to cited sources.
This is the third book published by the author, and the third one I bought and read. I am glad this expert has devoted his efforts to write this nice introductory book to "brain oscillations". In my opinion, reading this book is mandatory for anyone interested on EEGs and their quantitative study. It is a book that will help many people to understand why oscillations are so important for several disciplines, including psychology, psychiatry and neurophysiology. I tried to use the underlining options of when reading the book (that can be read in just two afternoons, since is very well written and easy to understand, which is by no way the same as being easy to write,on the contrary! ) but I declined because I was underlining almost everything!
